Soft enamel pins - embossed copper
Soft-enamelling is similar to the traditional
enamelling technique, but here the glass or
epoxy resin powder is replaced by liquid enamel
varnish. To ensure the varnish is properly
absorbed, the motifs are engraved at a deeper
level and the support plate therefore has to be
a bit thicker. That is what gives the pin its
typical multi-dimensional appearance.
Copper-embossing is the preferred technique
for fine relief and clearly separated colours.
A hand-made stamp is used to make the outline
and the shape is then beaten out. The main
characteristics of this pin are its colourful
appearance and metal edging.
In this case, the metal border can be thinner
and therefore finer than the one achieved with
photo-engraving, because the enamel varnish
is only applied to the pin once it has been
stamped out. This means it cannot be damaged
in the process.
The varnish makes lower baking temperatures
possible and soft-enamelling is cheaper overall.
Gold-, silver- or nickel-plating can also be
applied to this pin, even before the colour
coating is added.
